IPL (Indian Premier League) wants grand finale at Lord’s

April 21, 08 by CricStars

Lords Cricket Ground
Officials of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have offered to stage the grand finale of the multimillion-dollar championship this September at Lord’s, the Mecca of cricket, according to a report Monday.
The week-long finale would feature the top two teams from the IPL and the leading sides from the domestic Twenty20 leagues in England, Australia, South Africa and Pakistan, the Daily Telegraph reported.
The report, written by ex-England cricketer Simon Hughes, said Dubai had been earmarked for the event, but the ground was unlikely to be ready in time. However, there are said to be scheduling difficulties for such a grand event to be staged at Lord’s.
The paper said it would be hard to find a whole week in September to stage the finale. While the ideal time would be straight after England’s final one-day international against South Africa Sep 3, the ICC championship in Pakistan begins just a week later.
There is a free period in October, but England has never hosted a top-class tournament so late in the year.
However, the paper said the finale could still happen because whittling the teams down to one winner could be achieved in five days in the Twenty20 format.
It said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) would prefer to wait and see the Indian public and business community’s response to the IPL before they take the discussions further.
England fast bowler Matthew Hoggard recently said he had little doubt that England players would opt for the IPL if asked to choose between the Indian league and the ICC Champions Trophy.
Simon Hughes described the ICC championship as representing “one of world sport’s most pointless and derided events”.

IPL is beginning of an incredible journey, says Matthew Hayden

April 21, 08 by CricStars

Mathew HaydenAustralian opener Matthew Hayden described the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the beginning of an "incredible journey" and said initial matches of the Twenty20 championship had set a very high standard for the rest of the tournament.
Hayden, who is playing for Chennai Super Kings, said the high-scoring matches in the tournament have raised the bar for every team.
"In Mohali the other night, we saw over 400 runs scored in just 40 overs. We will see high scores regularly," he said.
Hayden was referring to Chennai Super Kings’ 33-run win against Kings XI Punjab Saturday. The Super Kings scored 240 and Kings XI replied with 207.
On his IPL stint, Hayden reflected on his first visit to Chennai in 1997 with the Australian ’A’ team and said that was the start of his "love affair" with India.
"I first visited Chennai in 1997 with the A team. Walking out to bat, I looked around at this stadium and dreamt of the day I will play for the Australian team. I have always had a soft corner for India and now, playing for Chennai Super Kings, my life has come a full circle as this city will be my base during the IPL."
Hayden sought to play down the contentious issues that cropped up during India’s tour of Australia earlier this year.
When asked about his relationship with Harbhajan Singh who is playing for Mumbai Indian, Hayden said: "We have had a few fantastic battles in Australia, and now I am looking forward to renewing my rivalry with Harbhajan."
Hayden said the non-availability of foreign recruits for the entire tournament would not affect the IPL.
"That’s the beauty of the IPL. You get to see almost all the top players in the world at some point in the tournament. I think, the IPL is the start of an incredible journey," he said.
On playing under Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s captaincy, Hayden said he had no issues and praised the Indian ODI captain as a "a fine thinker and a confident individual".
"For me, it is a great experience sharing the dressing room with Indian players and learning how they go about their cricket," he added.

Punjab Kings X1 vs Chennai Super Kings Pre match analysis

The second match of IPL features the Chennai Super Kings taking on Kings XI Punjab in Mohali at 5 P.M (IST). The hype surrounding the match is a battle between yuvi and MSD. Chennai strength liews in there batting line up while Punjab looks forward for a brilliant knock from yuvi

Ramnaresh Sarwan will miss the match for Punjab. Punjab also lack a opening combination. Sangakara may open the batting with Irfran pathan. On paper they look very balanced side, need to see how they do on grouund

Chennai have very good experience batting line up. Hayden and Fleming may start the innings and Hussey-oram- Dhoni will come handy middle of the innings. The bowling dept look bit shacky. Apart from Muaralitharan and Joginder Sharma no one have any good experience. Ntini will miss the match because of his SA domestic cricket commitments. Morkell one of the biggest star in ICC T20 world cup will also miss the match. Jacob Oram has a key role to play with bat and ball

Chennai Hayden, 2 Stephen Fleming, Suresh Raina,Jacob Oram, Mahendra Singh Dhoni , Parthiv Patel (wk), S Vidyut, Joginder Sharma, Manpreet Gony, Muttiah Muralitharan

Punjab Kumar Sangakkara, James Hopes, Sahil Kukreja, Sarwan, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, Tanmay Srivastava, Karan Goel, Brett Lee, Piyush Chawla or Romesh Pawar, Sreesanth.

Prediction: I will go for Chennai Super Kings, if punjab batted first and blasted inexperienced bowling attack and set a high target, both teams will have equal chances
