Ground fielding begins before the ball reaches the hands. A partner rolls a soft ball down a separate lane, giving the fielder time to move behind its path, lower their body and gather it cleanly without falling forwards. If the ball passes outside the fielder’s body, roll it more slowly and ask for small steps behind its path. Watch the player lower their hands in front rather than bending late and reaching sideways. Allow about 8 minutes for the station, including explanation, turns and rest.
Set up the drill
Make parallel lanes on a clear surface. Partners start a few metres apart with one soft ball per pair.
Equipment: Soft ball, 4 cones.
How to run it
- Roll the ball gently along the ground.
- The receiver moves behind its path.
- Bend comfortably and gather with two hands.
- Stand in balance and roll it back.
- Change roles after five rolls.
Get behind the ball and watch it into your hands.
A common mistake—and the fix
Reaching sideways while the feet stay still leads to misses. Slow the roll and encourage small adjustment steps.
Start closer and roll directly to the receiver.
Roll slightly to either side within the receiver’s safe reach.
What to measure
Count clean gathers from five rolls without increasing speed.
Use the first round as the player’s starting point. Keep distance, ball and target size the same when comparing another round. These counts are practice observations, not selection standards or promises of improvement.
Before you start
Use a level, clear surface and keep balls in their own lanes.
Use a soft ball for the version described here. Explain the stop signal, check the surface and keep waiting players clear. Adapt or stop if a player feels pain, distress or fatigue. Read the full safety and supervision guide.
Questions about this drill
What does roll-and-gather help players practise?
This ground-fielding activity teaches players to get in line with a slow rolling ball and collect it before standing up. Watch whether the ball is secured rather than pushed away.
How can I adapt this drill for a less confident player?
Roll directly towards the player from nearby. Introduce a small change of direction only when the first gather is comfortable.
What should I look for before increasing the challenge?
Look for the fielder getting in line and securing the ball before rising. Slow the roll if it escapes under the hands.
