THE QUICK ANSWER

A bowler who rushes towards the crease may lose balance before releasing the ball. Starting with just a few walking steps helps the player connect their approach, release and follow-through without chasing extra pace. If the approach speeds up and the finish becomes unsteady, shorten it to a comfortable walk without a ball. Ask the bowler to show a balanced follow-through before trying another gentle delivery. Allow about 10 minutes for the station, including explanation, turns and rest.

Set up the drill

Mark a start point and a release area. Leave a clear lane ahead and space to follow through. No batter is needed.

Equipment: Soft balls, flat markers.

How to run it

  1. Walk the approach without a ball.
  2. Repeat with an easy bowling action into an empty lane.
  3. Keep the approach length consistent for a small set.
  4. Pause to check balance at the finish.
  5. Add gentle pace only when movement remains comfortable.
Keep the approach smooth; let the action flow.

A common mistake—and the fix

A sprinting approach can disrupt balance. Return to walking and reduce the number of steps.

MAKE IT EASIER

Practise the sequence without releasing a ball.

ADD A CHALLENGE

Move from a walk to an easy jog under a coach’s observation.

What to measure

Count repetitions with a controlled finish rather than measuring speed.

Use the first round as the player’s starting point. Keep distance, ball and target size the same when comparing another round. These counts are practice observations, not selection standards or promises of improvement.

Before you start

Do not force a player into an uncomfortable action. Stop for pain or fatigue and seek appropriate coaching support.

Use a soft ball for the version described here. Explain the stop signal, check the surface and keep waiting players clear. Adapt or stop if a player feels pain, distress or fatigue. Read the full safety and supervision guide.

Questions about this drill

What does walk-in rhythm help players practise?

A few walking steps help the bowler connect approach and delivery without rushing. Watch for an action that stays comfortable and balanced from start to finish.

How can I adapt this drill for a less confident player?

Rehearse the movement without releasing a ball. Introduce gentle deliveries only when the player is relaxed and coordinated.

What should I look for before increasing the challenge?

Check the bowler stays balanced through the steps and release. Do not add speed to correct poor rhythm.
