SKILL GUIDE / 04 PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES

Cricket bowling drills

Find your rhythm. Hit your area.

Use a clear target and a comfortable action. Begin with a short approach, record where the ball lands, and extend the approach only when balance and direction stay consistent.

How to use these bowling drills

Accuracy practice should not become a contest to bowl as many deliveries as possible. Allow recovery, rotate into non-bowling activities and follow the workload rules that apply to the player and competition. Stop when pain, fatigue or a changing action appears.

A simple progression

  1. Target-zone bowling — Land the ball in a broad target area using a repeatable, comfortable action.
  2. Walk-in rhythm — Join a few walking steps to a smooth bowling action without rushing.
  3. Line corridor — Develop directional accuracy with a visible landing corridor.
  4. Spin landing ladder — Explore length control for spin bowling without chasing pace.

Choose the right challenge

A wide landing area is enough for the first round. If the bowler is losing balance or changing their action to hit the target, return to the easier setup. Keep the run-up and ball consistent when comparing accuracy.

Make feedback useful

Ask the bowler to name their landing area before a short set, then compare it with the actual bounce points. If line varies, widen the corridor and check that the approach remains comfortable. Do not add deliveries to chase a better score; appropriate workload and recovery take priority.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before the next session

Which bowling activity should I start with?

Start with target-zone bowling. Land the ball in a broad target area using a repeatable, comfortable action. Choose the easier version if the setup is unfamiliar.

How long should I keep the group on one activity?

The card times are starting points, including explanation and rest. Shorten a station if attention or control declines. Bowling workload rules and individual needs take priority over the timer.

How do I know when to make it harder?

Look for repeatable control, comfort and an understanding of the task. Change one element and watch the response. Return to the easier version if success disappears or the player becomes uncomfortable.
