India have named a strong India A squad for three red-ball matches in New Zealand, with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal included alongside several players who are already part of the senior Test setup.
Wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel will captain the side, while Rishabh Pant has also been selected. Pant's participation, however, will depend on him being cleared fit.
The selection gives India a useful mix of experience and emerging talent before the senior team's Test commitments in New Zealand. It also gives a number of players the chance to spend time in conditions that can be demanding for visiting batters and bowlers.
Rahul and Jaiswal add experience to India A
Rahul and Jaiswal are the two biggest batting names in the squad. Both have significant Test experience and their presence should give the India A top order a much stronger base.
For Rahul, the matches offer valuable red-ball time away from home. Jaiswal, meanwhile, will get another chance to adjust to New Zealand conditions, where the new ball can move and batters are often asked to be patient early in an innings.
They will be joined by Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudarsan, Ravichandran Smaran and Yash Rathod. That gives India A several different batting options and, importantly, creates competition for places before future senior selections.
Jurel gets another leadership opportunity
Jurel's appointment as captain is one of the most interesting parts of the squad announcement. India have several more experienced international players available, yet the selectors have again trusted the wicketkeeper-batter with a leadership role.
The tour will test more than his batting and keeping. Jurel will also have to manage a squad that includes established internationals as well as players still trying to move closer to the senior side.
For India, A-team cricket is not only about identifying the next player. It is also a place to test temperament, decision-making and leadership in unfamiliar conditions.
Pant's fitness will be closely watched
Pant has been included as a wicketkeeper-batter, but his availability is subject to fitness. That means his place in the playing XI cannot be treated as certain until he receives the required clearance.
If he is available, India A will have two international-quality wicketkeepers in Pant and Jurel. It will also give the selectors another chance to assess Pant's red-ball readiness in competitive match conditions.
For now, the key point is simple: Pant is in the squad, but his participation still depends on fitness.
Seam attack built for New Zealand conditions
India have selected a useful group of fast bowlers for the tour. Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar, Anshul Kamboj and Mukesh Choudhary are among the seam options, while Auqib Nabi provides another bowling choice.
Washington Sundar and Manav Suthar give the team spin options and also add depth to the lower order.
New Zealand conditions often bring seam and swing into the game, especially with a newer ball. These matches should therefore provide a strong test for both India's batters and its pace attack.
Why this India A tour matters
This is a stronger India A group than a normal development squad. Several players are already part of India's Test plans, while others are close enough to the senior side to be called upon if injuries or form create an opening.
That makes the three matches important for more than results. Rahul, Jaiswal and other senior players can use the tour for preparation, while the younger names have a chance to show that they can handle red-ball cricket away from home.
The tour should also give India's selectors a clearer view of the team's depth before the senior Test series in New Zealand.
